Here are things you can do to drive safely in the rain

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, more than 700,000 motor vehicle accidents are related to rain each year. These accidents result in more than 300,000 injuries and approximately 3,300 fatalities.

With statistics like these, you would think that all drivers would take extra caution when the rain begins to fall. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Some continue to drive as if the conditions are perfect, thus increasing the chance of an accident.

Here are some things drivers can to do drive more safely in the rain:

-- Turn on your headlights. This is one of the most important steps you can take, as it makes you more visible to other drivers.

-- Slow down. When you drive too fast in the rain, there is a greater chance of hydroplaning. When this happens, you are not only putting yourself in danger but you are doing the same to others on the road.

-- Don't use cruise control. Using this on slick roads actually increases the chance of an accident. The last thing you want to do is lose traction when using cruise control, as it can be difficult to regain control.

These are just a few of the many steps drivers should take when the rain begins to fall. During the spring months, this is common in many parts of the country.

If you are involved in an accident in the rain, don't hesitate to remove your vehicle from harms way, if possible. From there, receive medical attention to get a better idea of what type of treatment you require.
